Lt. William C. West Jr. ALS Memorial Road Race Wrap Up
On Sunday the 25th of September, 2011, the 6th Annual Billerica Police Road Race took place. Originally this Race was a “Run-for-Education”, which raised money for needy causes which supported education. However, the Race was re-named the Lt. William C. West, Jr. ALS Memorial Road Race three years ago, after the passing of retired Billerica Police Lt. William C. West, Jr. following a hard fought battle with the disease Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
This is a disease of the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement.
There was a Kids Fun Run, which started at 10:00 A.M., in which about 40 kids ran a 1.1. mile race. Then, at 11:00 A.M. the 5K/Walk/RUN commenced. There were about 180 runners and approximately 50 walkers.
The top female contestant was:
Zoe Masino, age 42, Billerica, Massachusetts, with a time of 24:48
The top male contestant was:
Festy Mbuva, Rochester, New Hampshire, with a time of 18:31
After the race, there was food, fun and music inside the function hall.
This year we raised over $10,000 at the event. $1,000 of this will be used for scholarships for high school seniors going to college. The balance will be donated to help cure ALS
