Statement on Fatal Lowell Crash – Updated Victim Identified

8/17/18 LOWELL – The identity of the man who died on Wednesday, August 15 in a crash in Lowell had been confirmed as Eric Schwabe, 34, of Billerica. On August 15, 2018, at approximately 6:50 p.m., emergency personnel responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash at Woburn Street and 495 in Lowell.
The preliminary investigation suggests that the decedent was operating a Volkswagen Jetta in the area of Billerica Avenue in Billerica when a Billerica Police Officer who was parked in the area attempted to stop the vehicle for a registration violation. The operator of the motor vehicle subsequently fled at a high rate of speed in the direction of Lowell and the officer lost sight of the vehicle. Upon arrival to the area of Woburn Street and 495, the Billerica officer observed that the decedent’s motor vehicle had struck a second motor vehicle before crashing into the concrete barrier. Schwabe was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the second motor vehicle remained on scene and was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
This incident is being investigated by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, the Lowell Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section. This is an open and ongoing investigation and no charges have been filed.

The preliminary investigation suggests that the decedent was operating a Volkswagen Jetta in the area of Billerica Avenue in Billerica when a Billerica police officer who was parked in the area attempted to stop the vehicle for a registration violation. The operator of the vehicle subsequently fled at a high rate of speed in the direction of Lowell and the officer lost sight of the vehicle.
