Chelmsford Police Department, On Tip from Billerica Police, Captures Bank Robbery Suspect After Pursuit that Ended in Bedford

Billerica Police | MA Posted on April 9, 2015 by BPD TechApril 9, 2015

CHELMSFORD — Police Chief James M. Spinney reports that the Chelmsford Police Department, acting on information provided by the Billerica Police Department, today located and apprehended a dangerous bank robbery suspect after a pursuit that ended in the town of Bedford.

On Thursday morning, Chelmsford Police Department Criminal Detectives, acting on information developed by the Billerica Police Department, tracked the suspect in Wednesday’s robbery of the Chelmsford Citizen’s Bank to a location in Nashua, N.H. While en route to Nashua, Chelmsford Police Inspector Jeff Blodgett recognized the suspect’s vehicle traveling on Rt. 3 in Chelmsford and began to follow it as it continued on Rt. 3. Patrol officers, in marked police vehicles, attempted a traffic stop of the vehicle, but the operator sped away, leading officers on a pursuit.

The operator refused to stop, leading police on a high speed pursuit before the operator lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree on Middlesex Turnpike in Bedford, just over the Billerica line.

The operator, identified as JASON JEWETT, AGE 38, OF LITTLETON was seriously injured in the crash. He is currently being treated for non life-threatening injuries at an area hospital.

JEWETT faces a number of charges including Operating a Motor Vehicle after License Revocation, Operating to Endanger, Failure to Stop for Law Enforcement, and Marked Lanes Violations. The investigation is ongoing and charges related to the bank robbery are still pending.
Chief Spinney notes that the strong partnership between the Chemsford and Billerica Police Departments and the teamwork showed by detectives from both departments directly led to the identification and ultimate apprehension of this dangerous suspect.

“I am proud to have such strong working partnerships with our neighbors, and I want to thank the Billerica Police Department for their assistance in locating and capturing this suspect,” Chief Spinney said. “This suspect was desperate to get away, but a careful and measured police response during the pursuit prevented injury to any civilians, regardless of the suspects intent.”

Chief Rosa added: “The Billerica Police Department received a reliable tip about the whereabouts of a dangerous robbery suspect, and we immediately shared that information with our partners in the Chelmsford Police Department. I am proud that we were able to work together for a positive outcome.”

The Chiefs also recognize and thank the Bedford Police Department and Massachusetts State Police for their assistance during and after the pursuit.

Additional charges may be pending against JEWETT. The investigation is ongoing.

Two Minors Involved in Suicide Hotline Hoax

Billerica Police | MA Posted on April 4, 2015 by BPD TechApril 4, 2015

Billerica — On Saturday, April 04, 2015 at approximately 4:15 PM, Billerica Police received a report from a National Suicide Hotline representative that they just received a call from an individual claiming to be a distraught military veteran from Billerica, Massachusetts that was contemplating ending their life with a firearm. After attempting to get the individual to talk further, communication was lost and attempts to reestablish contact were unsuccessful. At that time Billerica Police were contacted by the hotline detailing the statements made by the caller. Using investigative tools, police were able to confirm the caller to be in the area of Old Rangeway Road in Billerica. As police responded to the scene, officers observed two individual in the area of a residence on Old Rangeway Road. Upon seeing a police response, the two individuals immediately fled into a wooded area towards Route 3. Due to the serious nature of the threats and the inability of police to establish phone contact with the individual that made the call to the suicide hotline, assistance was requested from the Northeast Municipal Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC) special operations unit. In addition, a Massachusetts State Police helicopter was requested to the scene to assist with locating the individuals previously observed fleeing the scene into the heavily wooded terrain. Shortly after the arrival of special operations resources, the two individuals were located coming out of the woods on Chelmsford Road. A short investigation revealed that at least one of these individuals had called the National Suicide Hotline as a hoax and they were not in distress nor did they have access to firearms. The two individuals are not being named as they are both juveniles. At this time potential charges for making the hoax call are being discussed.

New Requirements For The Sale And Transfer Of Firearms

Billerica Police | MA Posted on March 17, 2015 by BPD TechFebruary 22, 2018

DCJIS

In August of 2014, Chapter 284 of the Acts of 2014 was signed into law. This action amended the Massachusetts gun law and made changes to many of the law’s provisions.

One of the changes made by the new gun legislation was the requirement that the Massachusetts Department of Criminal Justice Information Services (DCJIS) create a “Massachusetts Gun Portal.” The purpose of this Gun Portal is to allow individual firearms licensees and gun owners to report the personal sale, transfer, and surrender of firearms to the DCJIS via the internet. The goals of this provision were (1) to provide an easy, safe, electronic method for licensees to report firearms sales, transfers, and surrenders and, therefore, comply with the reporting requirements of the gun law, and (2) to speed the entry of gun sale, transfer, and surrender data into the Massachusetts Instant Record Check System (MIRCS) database. The new gun law requires the Gun Portal to be operational by March 15, 2015.

As a result of the above, the DCJIS will implement the Massachusetts Gun Transaction Portal on Sunday, March 15, 2015. The portal will be available at https://mircs.chs.state.ma.us/fa10. Once implemented, all Massachusetts firearms licensees and gun owners will be required to report all personal sales, transfers, and surrenders of firearms to the DCJIS via the new Portal. Paper FA-10 forms will no longer be accepted by the DCJIS for these transactions and will be returned to the submitting individual.

Should you have any questions about the changes identified in this communication, please contact the DCJIS Firearms Records Bureau at 617-660-4782.

Motor Vehicle Collision Involving Pedestrians

Billerica Police | MA Posted on February 28, 2015 by BPD TechMarch 3, 2015

Billerica – On Saturday, February 28, 2015, at approximately 7PM, Billerica PD responded to a reported motor vehicle collision involving two pedestrians.  Officers arrived to learn that an elderly male had been attempting to push his disabled motor vehicle off the roadway in the area of #649 Boston Road, Billerica, across from Town Plaza, when he was assisted by a Good Samaritan.  The Good Samaritan began to push the disabled motor vehicle from behind while the elderly male assisted by steering the disabled vehicle from outside the open driver’s side door.  The preliminary investigation shows that due to an electrical problem, the disabled vehicle did not have any lights illuminated during the incident.  A Chevy Trailblazer being operated southbound on Boston Road struck the left rear end of the disabled motor vehicle causing personal injury to both pedestrians. They were subsequently transported to Lahey Clinic Burlington with non-life threatening injuries.  No drugs or alcohol are believed to have played a role in the accident.  The accident is still under investigation by the Billerica Police.
