Sharps Collection Program

Since July 1, 2012, a statewide ban on the disposal of sharps in solid municipal waste/household trash will took effect. The majority of needles, lancets and syringes had been thrown away in household trash putting neighbors, children and solid waste workers at risk of needle stick injuries and infections. These items should never be disposed of improperly.

The Board of Health Office (since late 2009) has and will continue to accept sharps such as lancets, needles, syringes, and unopened sharps.  These sharps must be in a sharps container or a rigid plastic container such as a detergent bottle, not a soda or bleach type bottle.  Reinforce the lid with heavy-duty tape.

At this time there will be no fee charged.  The hours for drop off are Monday through Friday 8:30-10 am and 3-4 pm.  If you have any questions or there may be special circumstances involved please feel free to contact Richard Berube, Director of Public Health at 978-671-0931 or Christine West, R.N., Public Health Nurse at 978-671-0932.

Mailbox Vandalism Using Fireworks – Updated

Over the last two weeks the Police Department has seen random reports of late evening explosions and on 11/15/13 we received a couple of reports of mailboxes destroyed by explosions on Putnam Rd, Rosewood Av and recovered some fireworks near a mailbox on Shawsheen Rd.  These are “commercial-grade” fireworks that people typically buy in stores in New Hampshire for the Fourth of July. Another incident may have occurred on Corthell Av around the same time frame but was not reported to the Police Department. On Putnam a neighboring home sustained damage from flying debris. Most of these vandalisms and explosions are occurring around midnight. If anyone has any information regarding these incidents please call the police station at 978-667-1212 or, to remain anonymous, you can submit a tip here.

Boston Road Closing – Fuel Spill Update

Please be advised there was an fuel spill on Boston Road this morning at 4:30AM and Boston Road is closed for clean-up purposes between Heritage Rd and Floyd St.  It was caused by an accident involving a vehicle coming out of Pro Fitness and colliding with a tractor trailer.  DPW was the first to respond with clean up.  Sand was spread immediately.   Clean Harbors is now on site and have spread quick dry and sand.  One catch basin was infiltrated but contained in the trap, it did not rise to the pipe level and therefore did not impact any wetlands or watersheds.  The catch basin is being cleaned by clean harbors.  A street sweeper will take two hours to clean up the site.  The road is currently closed and should be opened this afternoon well before rush hour. Electronic signs and details have been posted to redirect traffic.  Pond Street will be taking truck traffic during this temporary detour.  Thank you for your patience during this inconvenience.

Update 10/15/13 8:15pm – Arrested

Billerica – The Billerica Police Department holds two warrants for:

Nicholas A. Hussey
Last known addresses:  1 Cherry St. Billerica and 6 Bixby Rd. N. Andover
Age: 20

Mr. Hussey is wanted in connection to a house break on Wyman Rd on September 30, 2013 and a break to a motor vehicle at Kentucky Fried Chicken on October 12, 2013.

Felony Offenses:

  • 266/16/A B&E BUILDING NIGHTTIME FOR FELONY c266 S16
  • 266/127/A DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY +$250, MALICIOUS c266 S12
  • 266/20/A LARCENY FROM BUILDING c266 S20
