Meet “Yak”

Billerica Police | MA Posted on September 6, 2011 by BPD TechFebruary 22, 2018

After 8 ½ years on the job, Barek has retired. Barek was a certified, dual purpose, police Service Dog and the decision was made to start training a new dog while he was still able to work, thus providing certified K9 service without interruption.  Barek will live out his retirement years with his handler, Patrolman Tsoukalas and his family. Barek’s replacement is Yak.

Yak is an 18 month old German Shepherd that was donated by the owners of Lou’s Custom Exhaust and Billerica resident John Barbarossa.

After 11 weeks of narcotic detection training and 14 weeks of patrol training, Yak is a fully certified, dual purpose, police service dog.

In addition to narcotic detection, Yak is able to track wanted suspects and missing people, conduct building searches for suspects in hiding, evidence recovery, off lead open area searches and provide handler protection.

Be Aware Of Paving Scams

Billerica Police | MA Posted on September 2, 2011 by BPD TechFebruary 22, 2018

Residents need to be aware of thieves posing as legitimate driveway pavers. Recently, we had a resident that was approached by one of these people.  The suspect told the resident that he had leftover asphalt from a previous job and offered to repave the residents driveway for $4000.00.  The suspect was paid and completed half of the driveway before explaining to the homeowner that he needed to leave to pick up more asphalt. The suspect never returned.

Currently, BPD is working with another municipal police department in an attempt to hold this person accountable.  Residents should be very wary when a contractor shows up to their home uninvited, offering special deals.  There are numerous, legitimate, Billerica based pavers to choose from.  Anytime a resident is approached by a contractor in this manner they should contact BPD immediately so we can check on the legitimacy of their operation.  Paving scams are not uncommon and its better to be safe than sorry.

Parking Dispute Ends In Arrest After Knife Shown

Billerica Police | MA Posted on September 1, 2011 by BPD TechFebruary 22, 2018
Anthony A. Paolini, 39, 22 Kenmar Dr #210, Billerica

BPD Officers responded to Kenmar Dr on 8/31/11 at approximately 4:26PM for a reported argument that resulted in one of the parties being threatened with a knife.  Officers Avant, Osgood, Grogan and Sgt Coffey responded to the scene immediately and began a search for the suspect.  Detectives Devito and Nestor assisted patrol units at the scene.

The trouble began when a resident of the apartment complex moved his vehicle to a courtyard area between the buildings in order to fill his tires with air.  The suspect confronted the victim, taking issue with the location of the parked vehicle.  In the course of the dispute the suspect pulled out a knife towards the victim in a threatening manner.  The victim then jumped into his vehicle and fled.

Within a short period of time Sgt Coffey and Officer Parker tracked down the suspect, Anthony A. Paolini, at 22 Kenmar Dr.  Mr. Paolini was placed under arrest and charged with assault by means of a deadly weapon.
