Medication Disposal Program

Billerica Police | MA Posted on March 26, 2012 by BPD TechMay 18, 2012

Billerica – On Monday, March 26, 2012, the Billerica Police unveiled its newest initiative in reducing the availability and abuse of diverted prescription drugs. A self-standing “Unwanted Medication Kiosk” will now be permanently located in the public lobby of the Billerica Police Department. The kiosk can be used by citizens to safely dispose of expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. The kiosk is designed with a slot on the front that is capable of accepting sealed plastic bags containing pills. No liquids or sharps may be deposited into the kiosk. Residents are asked to remove the pills from the prescription bottles and seal them in a plastic “Ziploc” type bag before arriving at the police station. Plastic bags are available at the kiosk for residents that are unable to take this step in advance.

The purchase and installation of the kiosk was grant funded through a cooperative partnership between the Billerica Board of Health, the Lowell Health Department and the Upper Merrimack Valley Public Health Coalition. The funding was provided by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) Bureau of Substance Abuse Services (BSAS) in an effort to reduce opioid overdoses.

Rates of prescription drug abuse in the United States are increasing at alarming rates, especially for teenagers who report that they can easily obtain prescription pills from medicine cabinets in their own and other people’s homes. Common practice has been for residents to dispose of their unwanted medication by throwing it into the trash or toilet. Unfortunately some communities are finding drug residue in surface waters and/or water supplies. With this newest initiative, the Billerica Police Department is taking a proactive step towards providing a safe solution to get rid of expired, unused and unwanted medications, keeping them out of the hands of our youth and our water supply.

Boy, 10, Recovering After Being Hit By Truck

Billerica Police | MA Posted on March 23, 2012 by BPD TechFebruary 22, 2018

A 10 year old Billerica boy is recovering from serious injuries after he was struck by a box truck and possibly an SUV while crossing Middlesex Turnpike yesterday afternoon.   According to a relative of the boy, the family expects him to be released from the hospital tomorrow or Sunday.  Despite the severity of the accident, he is expected to make a full recovery.

At approximately 3:26 pm on 3/22/2012 BPD received a 911 call that a child had been struck by a truck on Middlesex Turnpike in the area of Marshall St.  Police, Fire and EMS were dispatched immediately with the first unit arriving within one minute.  Patrolman Don Boulette immediately began providing emergency care to the victim as Billerica EMS and Fire got to the scene.  Paramedics Paltrineri and Voutselas immediately took over care of the patient and determined the injuries warranted a helicopter transport to a trauma center.  Billerica Fire and Police secured the Akeson soccer field as a landing zone.  Medflight arrived at the field within five minutes of being dispatched and transported the victim to a Boston hospital.

An initial investigation revealed that the boy was initially struck by a box truck in the southbound lane and was then thrown into the path of an SUV headed north where he was possibly struck again.  Both vehicles then collided in the northbound lane.  When Patrolman Boulette arrived the victim was found under the front of the SUV.

The Massachusetts State Police were requested at the scene to assist BPD with an accident reconstruction and at this time the investigation is on-going.

All the men and women at Billerica Public Safety wish this young man a full and speedy recovery.

Burglary Suspect Pleads Guilty

Billerica Police | MA Posted on March 16, 2012 by BPD TechMarch 16, 2012

Billerica – On Thursday, March 15, 2012, Anthony Squeglia, 32, of, Woburn, MA, plead guilty to multiple felony counts of Burglary and Receiving Stolen Property related to a series of house breaks back in October 2010 in Billerica, Westford and Bedford. The investigation into Mr. Squeglia began on October 22, 2010 in Billerica following an attempted break into a residence off of Nashua Road. A homeowner arrived home and discovered Mr. Squeglia coming from behind the residence claiming to be there to do home repairs. After fleeing the scene, Billerica detectives made numerous, unsuccessful attempts to locate Mr. Squeglia.

Approximately ten days later, on November 3, 2010, Billerica PD responded to a past house break on Concord Road. It was discovered that a suspect had forced entry into the unoccupied home and removed cash, electronics and jewelry. On the same date, Bedford Police responded to an attempted house break in their town. A witness in that case observed a vehicle fleeing the area that was tied back to Anthony Squeglia. As a result of these cases, Billerica PD, along with other area departments began an active surveillance of Anthony Squeglia.

On November 8, 2010, at approximately 1330 hours, Anthony Squeglia was observed coming from the area of a residence in Westford. Immediately after leaving the area, Westford Police confirmed the home had been broken into. Anthony Squeglia was subsequently stopped on the Lowell Connector in Lowell MA. Stolen property from the Westford home, as well as items stolen from the Billerica incident back on November 3, 2010 was located inside Mr. Squeglia’s motor vehicle.

Anthony Squeglia was sentenced out of Woburn Superior Court on numerous indictments related to the above incidents. He was sentenced to 1.5 to 2 years in State Prison along with 4 years probation

Fugitive Arrest

Billerica Police | MA Posted on March 15, 2012 by BPD TechMarch 16, 2015

Billerica – On Wednesday, March 15, 2012 at approximately 1130 hours, Billerica Police arrested Elvis Hidalgo, 47, of #19 Greve Street, Methuen MA for Possession of Chemical Mace without a License. The arrest was made following observations of suspicious activity made by Lieutenant Ryan Columbus of Tewksbury Police in the area of the North Billerica Commuter Rail Station. Lt. Columbus was recently sworn in as a Special Billerica Police Officer under a mutual aid pact initiated by the Lowell Police Department with six Greater Lowell Communities (Lowell, Billerica, Westford, Dracut, Tewksbury, Tyngsboro, and Chelmsford). After stopping Elvis Hidalgo it was discovered he was in possession of Chemical Mace without an FID, a misdemeanor in Massachusetts punishable by up to two years in jail or a $500 fine. Following the arrest, Elvis Hidalgo was determined to have been wanted out of New York City for a 1994 felony drug arrest. It was later determined that Mr. Hidalgo had used a false name during his 1994 New York City arrest. He was positively identified through finger prints obtained following his arrest in Billerica. The New York City District Attorney’s Office issued a detainer on Elvis Hidalgo and has taken steps to rendite him back to their State to be tried on his earlier drug charges.

Any additional questions should be directed to Sgt Roy Frost, 978-667-1212 x120
